American Impressionist Painter John White Alexander was a painter, born near Pittsburg, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, USA. He began as an illustrator for Harper's Weekly in New York (c.1874), studied in Germany and Venice (1877), returned to New York (1879), and moved to Paris (1890?1901). He settled in New York (1901) and was a successful portrait painter using an Art Nouveau style, as seen in ?Isabella; or the Pot of Basil? (1897).
